There are hundreds of Indian restaurants in and around Edinburgh. Here is why Itihaas in Dalkeith stands apart.

One of the Most Awarded Indian Restaurants in Scotland
The awards speak for themselves. Itihaas has won Scottish Curry Awards Restaurant of the Year, Best Chef in the UK from Curry Life Magazine, Asian Restaurant Awards Best in Midlothian, the prestigious Tiffin Cup at the House of Commons in London, and TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice — placing us in the global top 10% of restaurants worldwide. We have won the Midlothian Food and Drink Awards multiple times and been named a finalist in the Edinburgh Evening News Curry House of the Year.
Executive Chef and founder Matin Khan is a former Scottish Curry Chef of the Year. He brings decades of experience in Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine to every dish that leaves the kitchen.
AA Rosette — One of Only Four in Scotland
Itihaas holds an AA Rosette for culinary excellence. Only four Indian-style restaurants in Scotland have achieved this recognition. An AA Rosette is awarded by independent inspectors who assess food quality, preparation, and presentation. It is not a popularity vote — it is a professional assessment of cooking standards.
The Khan Family Story
Itihaas was founded in 2007 by Matin Khan, who brought his passion for Bangladeshi and Indian cooking from his family’s roots in Bangladesh to Dalkeith, Midlothian. The name “Itihaas” means “history” in Hindi — fitting for a restaurant built on recipes and traditions passed down through generations.
In 2011, the family opened a sister restaurant, The Radhuni, in nearby Loanhead. Both restaurants are independently award-winning but share the same commitment to quality, fresh ingredients, and genuine hospitality. The Khan family continues to run both restaurants, with Matin Khan as Executive Chef and the next generation now contributing to the business.
Real Ingredients, No Shortcuts
We use 100% unprocessed meats in every dish. No pre-made sauces, no frozen starters, no shortcuts. Our kitchen prepares everything fresh, which is why our dishes taste the way they should and why our regular customers keep coming back.
4.6 Stars, 900+ Reviews, #1 in Dalkeith
Our customers consistently rate us 4.6 stars on Google. On TripAdvisor, we have over 900 reviews and are ranked the #1 restaurant in Dalkeith. On Restaurant Guru, we have 2,500+ reviews with a 4.6 rating. These are not curated testimonials — they are real experiences from real diners.
Community First
Itihaas is more than a restaurant. We are a major sponsor of sports, social, and community clubs across Midlothian. Every December, we donate 1% of our total food takings to Barnardo’s, the UK’s largest children’s charity, supporting disadvantaged young people in Edinburgh and Midlothian.
The Location Advantage
Yes, we are in Dalkeith rather than Edinburgh city centre. For many of our customers, that is the point.
A 20-minute drive from Edinburgh gets you free parking, a quieter atmosphere, lower prices than city-centre equivalents, and food that — as one TripAdvisor reviewer wrote — “surpasses anything the city centre provides in terms of Indian cuisine.”
