About 20 minutes by car via the A7. We are at 17-19 Eskbank Road, Dalkeith, EH22 1HD — just 2 miles from the Edinburgh city bypass (A720). Several bus routes from Edinburgh stop in Dalkeith town centre, a short walk from the restaurant.
Yes. There is free street parking in Dalkeith right near the restaurant. Unlike most Edinburgh city-centre restaurants, you will not need to pay for parking or hunt for a space. This is one of the reasons many of our regular customers prefer the short drive from Edinburgh.
Many of our customers think so. We hold more national awards than most Edinburgh city-centre Indian restaurants, including an AA Rosette — one of only four Indian restaurants in Scotland with this distinction. You also get free parking, a quieter atmosphere, and award-winning food at prices that are typically lower than city-centre equivalents.
We serve fresh Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine. Our menu includes starters, tandoori dishes, classic curries, house specialities, biryanis, fish dishes, vegetarian options, and a range of breads and side dishes. All our meats are 100% unprocessed.
Our butter chicken is one of the most ordered dishes — a creamy, mild tomato-based sauce that appeals to all spice levels. The garlic chilli chicken is a house favourite for those who like a kick. Our fish curries — including fresh salmon dishes — are popular and relatively unusual for Indian restaurants in Scotland. For first-time visitors, we recommend the Thali platter, which gives you a selection of dishes on one plate.
Yes. Just ask your waiter and the kitchen will adjust the spice level to your preference.
Some dishes contain nuts, which are marked with (N) on the menu. If you have a nut allergy or any other allergy, please inform your waiter before ordering and we will advise which dishes are safe for you.
Yes. We have vegetarian options across all sections of the menu. Vegan dishes are available — ask your waiter for guidance, as many dishes can be adapted. See our Dietary Options page for full details.
Yes. Dishes containing gluten are marked with (G) on the menu. Many of our dishes are naturally gluten-free. Please let your waiter know about your requirements and they will guide you through the options.

Itihaas was founded in 2007 in Dalkeith by Matin Khan. The name “Itihaas” means “history” in Hindi.
Both restaurants are owned and run by the Khan family. Itihaas in Dalkeith was founded in 2007 and The Radhuni in Loanhead was founded in 2011. They are sister restaurants — both award-winning — but each has its own menu and identity.
Itihaas has won numerous awards including Scottish Curry Awards Restaurant of the Year, Curry Life Magazine Best Chef in the UK, Asian Restaurant Awards Best in Midlothian, the Tiffin Cup at the House of Commons, TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice (global top 10%), TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame, and an AA Rosette for culinary excellence.
See our Awards page for the full list.
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 12pm–2pm and 5pm–10:30pm. Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 12pm–2pm and 4:30pm–10:30pm. We are closed every Tuesday.
