“When I was blind I felt totally helpless. Now I can take care of my family again. Thank you!”

A campaign is underway, involving hundreds of leading Asian restaurants across the UK, which invites you to make a small donation to help restore sight to vulnerable poor people in Bangladesh.

At the end of your meal, a voluntary charge of £1 per table will be added to your bill (after service and VAT). You can easily opt out if you inform your table waiter that you do not wish to participate.

What is Vision Bangladesh?

Vision Bangladesh is a ground breaking partnership between BRAC and Sightsavers.

Our aim is to eradicate avoidable blindness in Sylhet by 2013 and across the whole of Bangladesh by 2020. We are already well on the way to achieving this ambitious task. Since January 2011, we have organised more than 21,000 successful cataract operations.

We need your help to continue our work and reach our target of performing 100,000 sight restoring operations in the division of Sylhet by 2013.

A simple 20 minute operation, costing only £20, can change a person’s life forever.

Donate £1 on your bill today – and give a gift that will last a lifetime.

Matin Khan with Itihaas staff displaying TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence

Indian restaurant boss Matin Khan faces a chilli night behind bars after agreeing to let police arrest him for charity.

In signing up to take part in a ‘Jail Break’ fundraising event, the dad of three, who runs Dalkeith curry house Itihaas, has agreed to spend a minimum 12 hours behind bars to raise cash for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The charity grants magical wishes to children and young people aged three to 17 who are fighting life-threatening illnesses.

With bail set at £2000, Matin will need to dig deep into his own pocket if no-one steps forward to help.

Dalkeith Indian restaurant hits heights with travellers

Multi award-winning Dalkeith restaurant Itihaas has been honoured by the world’s largest travel site.

The Indian-Bangladeshi restaurant on Eskbank Road has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence which is given to top rated accommodation, businesses, restaurants and attractions as reviewed by travellers.

To qualify, businesses must maintain an average rating of four or higher out of a possible five marks as reviewed by travellers on TripAdvisor. Additional criteria include the number of reviews and how recently they were submitted.

In late 2010 and earlier this year Itihaas was voted the best South Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant in Scotland. It was also one of only four finalists in the Indian category of the 2011 Scottish Restaurant of the Year Awards.

Director Matin Khan commented: “At Itihaas we strive all the time to offer our customers a memorable dining experience. This accolade is further evidence that our staff’s hard work and skills are continuing to be appreciated by customers who travel from near and far to enjoy our food.”

Christine Petersen, President of TripAdvisor for Business, added: “Our Certificate of Excellence programme gives exceptional businesses the recognition they deserve.”

TripAdvisor Media Group attracts more than 50 million unique monthly visitors to its sites across 18 travel brands.

Matin Khan in Jailbreak!

On Wednesday 7 December 2011, Matin Khan of Itihaas restaurant from Dalkeith will be “arrested” by Lothian and Borders Police to participate in an organised jailbreak for charity. The aim is to raise £2,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Scotland who help to make wishes come true for children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses in Scotland. Please dig deep and help us to smash that target of £2,000!

A JustGiving donation page has been setup to collect donations and it would mean a lot if you could make a donation, small or large. JustGiving will send all donations direct to the charity.  Make sure to reclaim Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer.

Recommended Meal – July

For this months recommendation, the dishes are mostly traditional but we begin with a dish not commonly found in Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants.

Starter – Garlic Mushrooms

Start off your meal with a light mild-flavoured dish – chopped mushrooms, fresh garlic, coriander and herbs in a mild but tasty sauce.

Main – Sag Gosht

Turning up the heat now, our main course is a popular dish in South Asia with succulent pieces of lamb with fresh spinach leaves. This dish is also available with chicken if you prefer poultry.

Side – Bombay Alo

Potatoes infused with delicate spices makes a perfect side dish to compliment the spinach main course.

Bread – Tandoori Roti

A tandoori roti (like a chapati but cooked in a tandoor – a clay oven) is the perfect bread to eat with your main course of lamb and spinach.

Rice – Pilau Rice

With this meal we think bread is enough, but if you’re a rice fan then the popular Pilau Rice will suit this months Recommended Meal.

Taste of Business

Itihaas recently hosted a networking lunch for Midlothian and East Lothian’s Chamber of Commerce. Matin Khan also offered his insight to the success of Dalkeith’s popular Indian restaurant!  Other than high quality Indian food and excellent customer service, customer engagement is very important!

“Engage in a dialogue, listen to them, encourage them to give you their feedback – negative or positive. Act on any criticism or worthwhile suggestion.”

Proceeds from the lunch where also donated to a charity chosen by the Chamber of Commerce – Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.
